Douglas Herbison

About
Douglas Herbison currently lives in Bothwell with his wife Eileen, a book-keeper, and his daughter Claire. Douglas graduated from the University of London where he obtained an honours degree in economics and government. Shortly after graduating, he served as a lecturer at Bell College of Technology where he helped to encourage students who had been effectively abandoned by the system to go on to develop their full potential. He then went on to work for the British Retail Consortium for a number of years. Today, Douglas serves as the managing director of Europe Analytica, a Brussels-based company which specialises in research and advice on European affairs.
In his spare time, Douglas enjoys swimming, travel and walking and is also fluent in Italian and French. From 1973-1979, he served as a justice of the peace, and was an elected member of Motherwell District Council from 1973-1979. During this time, he served as vice-chairman of the planning committee and vice-chairman of the economic development committee. As a councillor, Douglas helped to re-develop difficult areas with Motherwell, generated employment, and improved housing. Additionally, Douglas was on the European election list in 2004 and 2009, and was a candidate for Inverclyde in 2005 and Hamilton North and Bellshill in 2007.
Outside of the party, Douglas has worked on a number of European-related campaigns, including the “Group Euro” information campaign, which informed bodies such as trade unions and chambers of commerce on the Euro from 1996-2001 and the EEC referendum campaign in 1973, where he served as an organiser for the West Scotland “Yes” campaign.
