Catriona Bhatia

About
Born and raised in the Borders, Catriona lives just outside Peebles. She is married and has four children who attend local schools.
During the past 8 years she has been a very effective Councillor for Tweeddale, with an impressive record of securing over £30million investment for new and/or refurbished schools, better bus services, kerbside recycling, pathways, and £20million for 150 affordable homes and sheltered housing for local people.
From May 2007 to June 2010 Catriona was the Executive Member for Education at Scottish Borders Council and steered through the radical Transforming Children’s Services Review which places the emphasis on effective classroom teaching and ensuring the schools can deliver the new Curriculum for Excellence. Catriona cares passionately about investing in Education and in equality of opportunity for all our children and young people, particularly in their Early Years. She has publicly supported the need to retain funding for nursery provision for 3 year olds and for the continuation of funding for Additional Needs Assistants and Learning Support Teachers in schools to support our most vulnerable children.
Locally, it is important to create “Green” jobs to replace those lost in other industries and secure more investment in the area to ensure we have a sustainable local economy. Finally Catriona has been campaigning to get the EU derogation on fuel prices in rural applied in the South of Scotland. This would cut prices at the pumps by 4p per litre saving people £2 per average tank of fuel.
