South Lanarkshire Council will soon consider Scotgen’s proposal to build a waste incinerator at Stonehouse, a small rural part of South Lanarkshire.
Jim Hume MSP with local campaigners against the incineratorAlthough recycling and reusing the waste we create is important, we must equally work to minimise or even prevent it occurring in the first place, while also investigating the options of limited energy recovery at the other end of the spectrum, such as anaerobic digestion. Therefore, whilst there is a place for some energy-from-waste developments in the bigger scheme of recycling and other waste initiatives, this should not be to the detriment of the local environment and it should not be at odds with local and national planning policies.
In this case, the proposed incinerator would be sited in a green belt part of the local plan and would be in the middle of agricultural land and an organic diary farm. The proposal would also be adjacent to an ancient woodland area, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Area of Conservation.
Local planning policies in general dictate a presumption against any development in the countryside or green belt area, and policies generally advise that waste incinerators should be located in so called ‘brownfield’ sites.
We need South Lanarkshire to receive as many objections to the proposal as possible and that’s why we need your help. Please sign the petition below.

I/We the undersigned object to Scotgen’s proposal (HM/10/0345) to build a waste incinerator at Dovesdale Farm and believe that it directly contravenes the Green Belt policy of South Lanarkshire’s Local Plan; conflicts with advice on suitable locations for waste facilities contained in the Scottish Government’s Zero Waste Plan; and I/we hereby call upon South Lanarkshire Council to refuse the application.
