Education Committee must hold inquiry into Russell behaviour

Scottish Liberal Democrats have called for a parliamentary inquiry into the Education Secretary’s relationship with the college sector.

The party’s education spokesperson and member of the Education and Culture Committee, Liam McArthur MSP, has raised concerns about a culture of bullying and secrecy between Mike Russell and the college sector. This come as after the chairman of Stow College resigned from his post.

Commenting, Liam McArthur MSP said:

“The Education Secretary’s behaviour over this matter betrays seriously poor judgement on his part. It also illustrates perfectly his bullying style in relation those who disagree with him. Little wonder then that there are growing concerns in the college sector about a culture of fear and intimidation.

“Mr Russell concedes that Mr Ramsay’s behaviour is a matter for the Stow College board. Nevertheless, he saw fit to call him in for a meeting at which he demanded his resignation, and then wrote to all College Principals and Chairs making public his demand.

“For him to then suggest that he ‘respects’ Mr Ramsay’s decision to resign is beyond parody and sets an exceptionally dangerous precedent for the future.

“There must be an immediate inquiry into these events, and the wider concerns being expressed about the Cabinet Secretary’s behaviour towards the college sector in Scotland.”
