Both of Scotland's governments must work together to tackle unemployment

Commenting on unemployment figures and GDP figures published today which show Scotland’s unemployment rate is 8.2 percent and GDP fell by 0.4 percent, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie MSP said:

“These disappointing figures will puncture the SNP Government’s complacency on the performance of Scotland’s economy.

“There is a huge economic opportunity which they should maximise. The Scottish Government should look again at Liberal Democrat plans to use the hundreds of millions of pounds of public resources locked in Scottish Water to boost employment through investment in energy efficiency, super-fast broadband, small businesses, early intervention and science, whilst keeping it firmly in public ownership. Reforming Scottish Water to unlock £1.5billion to invest in jobs should be response from the Scottish Government to these figures.

“If we are to reverse the rise in unemployment both of Scotland’s governments must work hand in hand to offer a suite of employment-boosting measures. The Scottish Government should especially promote projects like the £1bn UK Youth Contract that helps young people find work and training opportunities.”
