Speaking about the hustings controversy local Liberal Democrat Jean Davis said; “I am disappointed that the Isles FM hustings has been cancelled. I have previously stated that I was happy to make myself available for the event but unfortunately not all candidates were able to attend.”
“I have been approached by the Labour Party which offered to hold the debate by funding it by a collection at the door and offering me choice of independent Chair. It was a fair offer but after due consideration I have decided to decline.”
“I have not made this decision lightly as I recognise that open debate between all candidates is an important part of the election process.”
“However in the interests of fairness I believe that such debates should be between all candidates standing at the election and should be independent of any political party.”
“Unfortunately the Labour Party initiated the problem by challenging other candidates to attend a hustings booked by them and despite the intervention of Isles FM the SNP have been unwilling to engage. Add to that the lack of availability of Sheena Norquay for justified personal reasons and the planned debate becomes unviable.”
“I believe that a hustings should be fair to all candidates, independently organised and chaired, and that all candidates should attend if at all possible.”
“If an independent organiser comes forward and the candidates are available I would be more than happy to participate. Meanwhile I am happy to continue to meet voters on the doorstep and at other planned meetings to which I have been invited.”
