Commenting on the news that the UK Government has given the green light for a UK grocery Ombudsman, Liberal Democrat Rural Affairs spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

"I have been calling for the establishment of a genuinely independent Ombudsman for some time.

"The crisis in the Scottish dairy sector is just one example of why an Ombudsman with real authority is needed to help police the relationships throughout the grocery supply chain.

"Only an Ombudsman with genuine powers will be able to help restore the balance in the relationship between producers and retailers."
