Government must do more for disadvantaged tenants

Commenting on a report from Shelter and Consumer Focus Scotland which reveals that disadvantaged tenants find it difficult in the privately rented sector, Liberal Democrat Housing spokesman Jamie Stone MSP said:

"Because of a shortage of social housing, people are forced into the private sector. Government must look at the difficulties this presents for tenants.

"Those on very low incomes often do not know the assistance they are entitled to. The private housing sector can be a daunting place.

"Liberal Democrats have long called for an increase in public sector social housing. This would be an alternative way to help those on the lowest incomes.

"Additionally the private sector need not be the bogeyman of the story. The Scottish Government must assist tenants who have to go down this road, both with advice and with appropriate financial support."
