Commenting on the result of the Glasgow North East by-election, Liberal Democrat Shadow Scotland Secretary Alistair Carmichael MP said:

“After twelve years of Labour, the desperately low turnout demonstrates a real lack of enthusiasm for a Labour Government that has not delivered for its own core constituency.

“The SNP were identified from day one as the challengers here, but as people see the ever growing list of broken SNP promises at Holyrood they are unable to take advantage of Labour's weakness.

“Eileen Baxendale fought a brave and principled campaign. She is entitled to be disappointed by the result but I know that she remains committed to the people of Glasgow North East and will be back to fight another day. I wonder if that can be said about all the other candidates.”

Liberal Democrat candidate Eileen Baxendale added:

“I had a great time on this campaign.

“I congratulate Willie Bain, but look forward to holding him to account at the General Election on all the promises he has made.”
