As Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed Al Megrahi formerly dropped his second appeal against his conviction as the Lockerbie bomber, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott MSP has called on the Scottish Government to reveal when a decision will be made about his future in Scotland.
Mr Scott’s call comes as seven US senators have written to the Justice Secretary about the Lockerbie bomber and reports in the media claim that Al Megrahi has been sending belongings back to Libya for some days now.
Commenting, Mr Scott said:
“The eyes of the world are watching Scotland right now and the SNP Government is botching this big decision. The Scottish justice system is paying a high price for the Justice Secretary to get a kick out of seeing his name in lights.
“Kenny MacAskill broke with all precedent by paying a personal visit to the Lockerbie bomber, but has remained tight lipped about what was said and any deal that has been done.
“Meanwhile, media speculation is frenzied and high profile international politicians like Hilary Clinton and US Senators are starting to intervene.
“The Scottish Government needs to put an end to this by telling us when they will announce the verdict.”
