Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Tavish Scott MSP has welcomed a commitment from the First Minister that his government will pitch for BT’s relocated call centre jobs from countries like India to come to Scotland.

Mr Scott made the call at First Minister’s Questions in the Scottish Parliament today.

BT announced this morning that they will cut their worldwide workforce by 10 per cent, but that they were considering bringing some work back that has been outsourced to other countries in recent years.

Commenting, Mr Scott said:

“I welcome the First Minister’s commitment that he will give one of his Ministers the job of putting a compelling case direct to BT for this work to come to Scotland.

“A few days work from his Ministers could win long term jobs for hundreds or thousands of people in Scotland.

“We know we have got the skills in Scotland - in abundance - to take customer service and technology jobs back from India.

“The centres in Dundee or Thurso, Alness, Aberdeen or Glasgow could be a base for them.”
