Pupils from Alford Academy were at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh today to promote an initiative designed to allow pupils to learn outdoors.
Alford Academy has been running their 'Classroom at Sea' programme for the past two years. On board the sailing vessel Leader, and accompanied by an RSPB ecologist, S2 pupils explore the wild places of the Inner Hebrides.

Experiences include meeting with the community of Eigg, investigating the strange history of Rum and exploring the geological landscape of Staffa.
The aim is to allow students to develop and apply abilities. Navigation applies maths, beach visits applies science but most valuable are the experiences that ask students to extend themselves, to lead, to participate and make informed decisions.
For some it is a highlight of their school career, for others it has been life changing. West Aberdeenshire & Kincardine MSP Mike Rumbles met the pupils at Holyrood to discuss the scheme. He said:
“This is a very a very worthwhile initiative. It is fantastic that pupils from Alford have had the opportunity to take part in this unique scheme that allows them to learn while sailing.
“This is an expensive project however and the organisers are always keen to secure sponsorship. Anyone who may be able to help can contact Alistair Thomson from Alford Academy by emailing red@dark.orangehome.co.uk”
