Local installers needed to support central heating

Liberal Democrat Energy spokesperson and MSP for Orkney Liam McArthur has highlighted the need for an adequate supply of locally based installers following a commitment from Scottish Gas to speed up the delivery of central heating systems in remote island communities.

Mr McArthur has also urged the Scottish Government to make sure that the public is aware of any changes in eligibility proposed under the new Energy Assistance Package.

Commenting, Mr McArthur said:

"Liberal Democrats welcome this commitment to speed up delivery of central heating systems in remote communities. With harsher winters, longer heating seasons and generally poorer housing stock in these areas, measures to curb fuel poverty are needed urgently.

"Despite recent improvements, the Scottish Government has in the past taken its eye off the ball in terms of improving central heating systems in island communities.

"Ministers must ensure that there is an adequate supply of locally based installers in these areas. This is the best way of guaranteeing that jobs get done on time and means that any subsequent problems to be dealt with quickly and efficiently.

"With the proposed changes in eligibility under the new Energy Assistance Package it is essential that Ministers make sure the public is made aware of what support they are entitled to and where they can get it."
