Ross Finnie MSP, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson, has called for the rules on mobile phone use in hospitals to be relaxed in Scotland. Mr Finnie's call follows new Department of Health guidelines in England that allow the use of mobile phones in areas where they do not interfere with hospital equipment.
Ross Finnie MSPCommenting Mr Finnie said:
"The use of mobile phones in Scottish hospitals would make it easier for patients to communicate with their families. Patients are currently charged 10p per minute to call friends and relatives from their sick beds. This can prove very expensive for long term patients and makes it difficult for some to keep in touch with family.
"If it is now proved that phones can be used safely in most areas of hospitals then the Health Secretary should follow suit in Scotland."
