Jim Tolson Liberal Democrat MSP for Dunfermline West has called on local authorities to carry out an audit of their outdoor sports facilities.
An official report, People and Sport in Scotland, found that outdoor sports pitches were used least and received the lowest rating of all facilities available.
Commenting Mr Tolson said:
“A recent report found that most people live within 20 minutes walk or public transport of community sports facilities. But, it also found that ‘the least positive approval ratings were for outdoor sports pitches, which also had the lowest use’.
“I want to see local authorities carrying out a thorough audit of their outdoor sports facilities. They need to take responsibility for making sure that pitches and courts are properly maintained and encourage residents to make use of them.
"It also makes sense to overhaul outdoor pitches and sports facilities during winter, when they’re least used.
“Well maintained sports pitches will encourage communities to get active. I hope that local authorities act on my call.”
Ends.
