Commenting on the BBC Trust’s rejection of the corporation’s plans to launch a £68m network of local news websites with video content, Liberal Democrat Culture spokesperson Iain Smith MSP said:

"I am pleased that the BBC Trust has listened carefully to the concerns of local newspapers and rejected these proposals.

“The onus is now on local newspapers to improve their own websites to deliver good quality local news media to the public.”
