WATES funding key to marine innovation

Speaking as the First Minister switched on the water to Scotland’s biggest hydro scheme near Fort Augustus, Inverness-shire, Liberal Democrat Energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP questioned the First Minister’s fixation with the Saltire Prize.

The First Minister has promised that the £10 million Saltire Prize will enable scientists to push forward new frontiers in marine energy.

Commenting, Mr McArthur:

“I am delighted that progress is continuing apace at this hugely impressive hydro project. It is an incredible achievement and will make a significant contribution towards helping us achieve our renewables goals.

"Glendoe is also a project worthy of the First Minister’s latest photo opportunity. Of more concern, however, is Mr Salmond's fixation with the Saltire Prize.

“While any commitment to funding developments in marine energy technology is welcome, ministers’ failure to guarantee future funding under the WATES scheme (Wave and Tidal Energy Support) seems horribly short-sighted.

"Instead, ministers choose to wrap themselves in the flag, and trumpet their Saltire Prize. It remains to be seen what criteria are set for this prize, though already there are concerns at the 'winner takes all' approach being adopted by the Government.

"In the meantime, if this prize gets as many applicants as it’s had launches and photo opportunities, it could yet be a success".
