Reduce underage pregnancy

Liberal Democrat Public Health spokesperson Jamie Stone MSP has expressed concern that the number of teenage pregnancies for under-16s is increasing.

This year, the number of under 16s falling pregnant has increased to 8.1 per 1,000.

Commenting, Mr Stone said:

“It’s really concerning that more under 16-year-olds are falling pregnant. Girls of 16 should be enjoying their youth and learning and preparing for adulthood.

“It is of course important that the Government supports those teenagers who have fallen pregnant. But, it is critical that the Government has a firm strategy in place to reduce the rate of pregnancies in under-16s. Quality relationship and sex education campaigns that raise awareness of the reality of having children at 16 are vital tools.”
