Investigation into former hospital sites needed

Liberal Democrat Chief Whip Robert Brown MSP has demanded an investigation of all former hospital buildings to ensure that no patient data has been left open to public view.

A BBC investigation has found that X-rays, photographs and paperwork was lying in Law Hospital in Carluke, which closed in 2001. In May, an STV report showed that children’s health records had been left in an abandoned hospital in Dundee.

Commenting, Mr Brown said:

“Once again, patients in Scotland have been badly let down. It will be an absolute disgrace if confidential patient information has been left in an abandoned hospital building since 2001.

“This is the second incident of patient records being left in former Scottish hospitals this year.

“The Scottish Government must order an investigation and full audit into all former hospital buildings to ensure that there are no more patient records or information lying discarded and open to public view.”
