Reprieve for ‘Goldfish’ workers welcome

Scottish Liberal Democrat MSP for Central Scotland Hugh O’Donnell has welcomed the move to secure 800 jobs that were under threat in Cumbernauld.

It has been reported that Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) will buy the Goldfish call centre in Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire.

Commenting, Mr O’Donnell said:

“This will come as a great relief to the employees whose jobs were threatened and their families.

“I am delighted that Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE) has recognised the potential of investing in Cumbernauld. I do, however, remain concerned at the numerous other job losses in Central Scotland.

“Job losses in this region are spiralling out of control. Around 2000 jobs were lost or under threat in the last month, including 800 jobs at the Freescale plant in East Kilbride.

“It is now vital that the Scottish Government comes forward and does everything it can to support those affected by these job cuts.

“A good start would be convening a Task Force to help those affected by job losses in Central Scotland to find new work and to offer services like fast-track training.”
