Jo Swinson MP has challenged the UK Government over a climb-down on new climate change laws.
The Government’s Climate Change Bill was recently downgraded from a full Bill to a draft Bill, meaning it will not come before Parliament this year as promised. Jo Swinson has raised the issue with concerned residents in East Dunbartonshire.
Jo Swinson MPMs Swinson said:
“The consensus on the need for strong, swift action to tackle climate change is stronger than ever, yet the Government has flown in the face of this by downgrading its Climate Change Bill to draft status.
“The full Bill will now not be brought before Parliament this year. Instead, it will be postponed until next year at the earliest, delaying the introduction of any measures it may contain to tackle global warming.
“There are a large number of residents in East Dunbartonshire who have contacted me with concerns about climate change. I have informed than that I have written to the Environment Secretary David Miliband to challenge this poor decision, and will continue to keep them up to date with developments in this area.
“We need action, such as green taxes and binding carbon emissions targets, to meet the challenge of climate change. This decision further strengthens the case that the Government is not serious about meeting that challenge.”
