Commenting as the Scottish Parliament passes the Social Security Bill, Scottish Liberal Democrat social security spokesperson Caron Lindsay said:
"Scottish Liberal Democrats were delighted to play a part in delivering new social security powers for Scotland, worth over £3 billion.
"The Scottish Government must now use these powers to tackle inequality and poverty and give everyone the chance to get on in life. People need to feel that they are treated with dignity and respect and that the organisations supporting them have confidence in the system. This is the measure against which they must now be judged and there can be no hiding from it.
"There are still huge challenges ahead to get the IT infrastructure and skills in place to put these powers to good use.
"With a million people in Scotland living in poverty, including one in four children, people are relying on ministers to get this right and they can't afford for payments to go astray or be delayed."
