Responding to the news that rehabilitation schemes are to receive £3.4m in new funding, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
“While this is announcement is good start we’ve got a long way to go to get prisoner throughcare up to scratch across the board.
“Two thirds of Scottish prisons are overcrowded and hundreds of cells are doubled up with inmates when they shouldn’t be. With prisoners packed in this tightly it becomes much harder for staff them to work with individuals and help rehabilitate them.
“Services need long-term funding security to tackle the crisis in prisoner mental health and get mentoring programmes on a steady footing where they can run effectively.
“Scottish Liberal Democrats also want to see the setting of new standards, including giving everyone seamless support that starts in prison and continues outside, backed by new rights to help with navigating housing, welfare and healthcare.”
