McArthur: SNP taken scenic route to banning fracking

Commenting on the Scottish Government’s announcement that there is to be a ban on fracking in Scotland, Scottish Liberal Democrat energy spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

“Scottish Liberal Democrats believe that opening up a whole new front of carbon-based fuels and energy production would do nothing to help meet Scotland’s climate commitments. I therefore welcome this announcement of a ban on fracking.

“The Scottish Government may have taken the scenic route to get there, but it is right to join the growing consensus in declaring that fracking has no place in Scotland.”

A moratorium on unconventional oil and gas extraction, which includes hydraulic fracking, has been in place since January 2015.

The Scottish Parliament voted to ban fracking on 1 June 2016 with the Liberal Democrats, Labour and the Greens in favour of a ban, the SNP abstaining and the Tories in opposition.
