Scottish Liberal Democrat Orkney MSP Liam McArthur has today described SNP Ministers as “arrogant and tone-deaf” over their proposals to abolish the board of Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE).
Ahead of Stage 2 of the Enterprise and Skills Review, the Scottish Parliament will tomorrow have an opportunity to vote against the Scottish Government’s proposals to centralise Highlands and Islands Enterprise.
The motion, which is likely to have the support of all opposition parties, follows widespread campaigning from the Scottish Liberal Democrats.
Commenting, Mr McArthur said:
“Despite the warnings of councillors, businesses and experts across the region, SNP Ministers seem committed to delivering another blow to Highlands & Islands Enterprise by stripping the agency of its board and decision making powers.
“These ill-judged and dangerous proposals demonstrate yet further intent from SNP Ministers to centralise the life out of the Highlands and Islands. It could mark the beginning of the end for our dedicated economic development agency.
“SNP Highlands and Islands MSPs can hide from this issue no longer. It is time they pin their colours to the mast. Will they prioritise their constituents or their government?”
