Responding to new figures showing the number of guardianship orders increased by 12.5% in the last year, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
"We have seen dramatic rises in the provision of guardianship orders in recent years. In many cases, guardianship orders are essential in helping people who do not have the capacity to make decisions of their own.
"However, we must also be vigilant to the fact that the present system can be unnecessarily rigid and circumstances can arise in which vulnerable or disabled people feel that their wishes are not being properly taken into account.
"We need to empower people and support autonomy so far as is possible. That's why Scottish Liberal Democrats believe we need to protect individual rights through a system of staged guardianships and a review of the Adults With Incapacity Act."
