McArthur: Prevalence of domestic abuse “shameful”

Responding to new statistics which reveal there were 59,541 domestic abuse incidents recorded in 2017-18, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:

“The prevalence of domestic abuse is shameful. There is no place for violence in Scotland and nobody should feel unsafe in their own home.

“The effects of controlling or coercive behaviour can be just as damaging as physical abuse. Ministers must make sure the resources are there to support or re-home victims at short notice wherever they are in Scotland.

“Ministers should also work to establish why the rate of reports of domestic abuse is three times higher in areas like West Dunbartonshire than it is in areas like Orkney.”
