Commenting on the day that the new stop and search code of practice comes into force and so-called consensual searches are banned, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP said:
“For the first time ever in Scotland, from today, every stop and search the police conduct is underpinned by law and every search must follow a clear procedure. Industrial scale stop and search, where people were searched en masse and without good reason, has rightly been consigned to history.
“This is good news for the officers who were under pressure to conduct searches they didn’t believe in and for everyone who agrees with Liberal Democrats that any police search must be justified and proportionate.
“These reforms were won by the Scottish Liberal Democrats following a two-year long campaign. It shows why you need the tenacity and determination of Liberal Democrats to stand up for civil liberties at Parliament when nobody else will.
“Police Scotland must now ensure that all officers are equipped with the training they need to be able to fully respect people’s rights and that the force builds upon these positive changes in its approach to community relations and keeping people safe.”
