Ahead of International Human Rights Day on 10 December 2016, Scottish Liberal Democrat justice spokesperson Liam McArthur commented:
“Last week, years of Liberal Democrat campaigning paid off as the SNP Government finally announced it would increase the age of criminal responsibility.
“Yesterday, the Tories rightly kicked their plans to scrap the Human Rights Act into the long grass.
“And next month, thanks to the Liberal Democrats, all police stop and searches will for the first time be properly regulated.
“These threats to our civil liberties show that we can’t take our human rights for granted. They also show the importance of having Liberal Democrats consistently challenging the record of both the Tories and SNP on protecting our civil liberties.
“There is so much more we need to do to ensure everyone has the chance to get on in life, from delivering a step change in mental health treatment to eliminating the gender pay gap. Children don’t have equal protection from assault, the use of counterproductive short-term prison sentences remains sky high and the SNP still haven’t scrapped their plans for a super ID database.
“Governments must be judged on their records, not their rhetoric. That is why we will continue to press for change on these issues and more over the year ahead.”
