Scottish Liberal Democrat energy spokesperson, Liam McArthur MSP has today called on the Scottish and UK Government to work together to ensure the emerging decommissioning industry prospers in Scotland.
His comments come after a new report, launched today by Oil and Gas UK, stated that decommissioning spending will total £17.6 billion between now and 2025.
Commenting Mr McArthur said
“Decommissioning presents countless opportunities for investment in Scotland that cannot be missed. The expertise within this industry, and potential to develop ideal decommissioning sites across Scotland, puts us in a unique position to exploit this emerging market.
“Spending on decommissioning is expected to be around £17.6billion between now and 2025. However, we have already seen big contracts and thousands of potential jobs drift away to our international competitors. This derelict of duty cannot be allowed to continue.
“The Scottish and UK Governments must therefore recognise the opportunity here and work together to support the entire industry and help ensure Scotland can take advantage of the jobs and wealth creation opportunities from decommissioning.”
