McArthur: 4 year delay can’t signal future for restorative justice

Responding to the publication of guidance for the delivery of restorative justice in Scotland, nearly four years after a Scottish Liberal Democrat amendment secured a commitment to producing it, the party's justice spokesperson Liam McArthur MSP commented:

"While it is welcome that the SNP Government has finally issued guidance on the use of restorative justice, we have had to wait nearly four years since Liberal Democrats secured a commitment to producing this.

"People across the justice system will hope that the delay with which the SNP produced this guidance is not symptomatic of their approach to restorative justice in future.

"We know the benefits restorative justice services can offer in the right circumstances. It can help victims overcome their experience and understand more about why they were a victim. It can also provide the opportunity for victims to receive a genuine apology while prompt those who caused harm to reflect on their actions and take responsibility.

“Restorative justice can be an important step in the rehabilitation process and it is time it was taken seriously."
