Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie has said his party will lead Scotland’s fight against climate change if the SNP won’t.
Mr Rennie nailed Lib Dem green credentials to the mast today at Pedal on Parliament in Edinburgh as he set out a radical green agenda with five green laws to protect nature and fight climate change.
The SNP have failed for three consecutive years to meet its climate change targets. The Green party have increasingly come under criticism for ignoring climate change.
Mr Rennie set out his party’s record of action in government and said only the Liberal Democrats had the ambition and the strength to deliver real change.
Speaking at a Pedal on Parliament event in Edinburgh, Mr Rennie said:
“Liberal Democrats are the only party to have nailed their green credentials to the mast, and set out how our radical agenda will be delivered in a way that is both credible and affordable.
“In stark contrast, barely a jot is heard from the SNP on radical action to tackle climate change. The sad reality is that under the SNP Scotland has failed to meet its climate change targets for three years running.
“Communities have been blighted by failed opencast mining. The sale of electronic cars has fallen back to a paltry six percent.
“And the Greens have come under criticism for ignoring climate change.
“It shows that only the Liberal Democrats have the ambition and the strength to meet these challenges head on.
“Protecting the environment is in the Lib Dem’s DNA, and having five green laws on the front page of our Manifesto shows our intent.
“From day one of the next Parliament we will have our green commitments on the table, from cleaning up the air we breathe, to greening the energy and transport we use. These are Liberal Democrats commitments because they build a fairer society.
“The new UK laws will help achieve existing Scottish Government targets and especially help meet those where performance is struggling. They would help Scotland along the way to meeting our world-leading climate change targets, which have been missed for three years running.
“Liberal Democrats will lead Scotland’s fight against climate change if the SNP won’t.
“That is what is needed to build a stronger economy.”
