Budget 2016: look beyond the headlines

This week George Osborne stood up and delivered his latest budget in the House of Commons.

The headlines focused on a new sugar tax that will increase the cost of fizzy drinks like Irn Bru. But as well as the sweet stuff there were plenty of measures that will leave a sour taste in the mouth.

Lessons must be learned on Forth Bridge closure

Last week a parliament committee published its report into the closure of the Forth Road Bridge.  It concluded that the fracture was not foreseeable.  It was, by design, a narrow inquiry that only sought to focus on the political and budget decision making.  It did not address compensation, the travel arrangements and the wider engineering issues.

GERS Figures are a crushing blow for the SNP's economic credibility

The latest annual figures setting out the income and expenditure for Scotland have just been published.

The top line from the latest figures showed that had we voted for independence, Scots would have faced leaving the UK with a gap between revenue and expenditure of £13.7bn.

This is more than we currently spend on NHS services every year.

This is incredibly serious.
