Liberal Democrat Scotland spokesperson Christine Jardine MP has today used a Westminster debate to back calls for the voting age to be lowered to 16.
This was a key pledge in the Liberal Democrats’ general election manifesto, which called for “creating a better democracy with a fair voting system in local government and Westminster, with votes at 16.”
Ms Jardine said:
“We need to seek imaginative ways of involving young people in politics.
“The spirited contributions which we saw from 16 and 17 year olds in the Scottish Referendum were amongst the most informed, enthusiastic and incisive.
“Votes at 16 brought so many young people into politics, which is exactly what we should be seeking to do.”
