Edinburgh West MP Christine Jardine has today warned that Heathrow expansion is "environmentally unthinkable" as MPs debate proposals in the House of Commons today.
Speaking ahead of the vote, Ms Jardine said:
"This proposal is environmentally and economically unthinkable; pouring thousands of tonnes of pollutants into our atmosphere and funneling yet more passengers to London.
"For 18 months, the SNP have been hymning the benefits of Heathrow expansion while refusing to say what impact 100 extra Scottish flights per week would have on the climate. Now their support seems to be up in the air. Whichever way the SNP eventually vote, Scottish MPs should remember that voting to expand Heathrow is showing complete contempt for Scotland's environment.
"We should be focusing on cheaper, better and faster rail services instead and spreading the benefits of international connections to regional airports rather than centralising yet more of our economy in the South East."
