Councils warn ending landfill by 2021 is “unlikely”

Commenting on a new report by local authority body Cosla which states that a ban on household waste going to landfill by 2021 is "unlikely" to be achieved, Scottish Liberal Democrat environment spokesperson, Rebecca Bell said:

“Scotland has made giant leaps in tackling the amount of waste we generate but it’s important that the Scottish Government does not shy away from this challenge at the last minute.

“It could go further by finally introducing a coffee cup levy which would prevent millions of cups going to landfill. A deposit return scheme could similarly reduce a vast quantity of waste and the amount of plastic that ends up in our seas.

“Alongside supporting local authorities in collecting and processing materials, this will be at the heart of building a more sustainable Scotland.”
