Cole-Hamilton: SNP drug and alcohol policy is an "utter shambles"

Responding to a statement from the Scottish Government on developing a new drug and alcohol programme, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:

"People have died as a result of SNP cuts to drug and alcohol services and now the SNP have the temerity to claim that they are delivering extra funding when all they are doing is restoring funding previously slashed by their administration.

"Drug deaths are soaring and the SNP are still sending people to prison, not treatment. This Government's drug and alcohol strategy is an utter shambles, it has failed for ten years and unless the Government admit this they cannot begin to turn the situation around.

"We are so far behind international best practice in this area. Reform of the Scottish and UK Government's failing strategies would alleviate the burden on the NHS, free up the justice system to tackle the organised crime groups behind the illegal drugs trade and ensure people who need treatment get help instead of being sent behind bars."
