Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has called on the Scottish Government to address “scandalous” cancer treatment waits, after new statistics published today show 16,105 deaths were caused by cancer in Scotland in 2017, up from 15,813 the previous year.
Only 84.6% of cancer patients were seen within the 62-day waiting time target for the quarter 1 April to 30 June 2018.
Alex Cole-Hamilton said:
“Cancer is becoming a more and more prominent problem with our ageing population and the Scottish Government has a duty to make sure the NHS is ready for that.
“In September we saw cancer wait time performance hit rock bottom lows because of irresponsible under-resourcing of the health service and poor workforce planning.
“The sad reality is that for most Scots cancer has already touched the lives of family members or friends. The Health Minister must take swift action to ensure more patients don’t face scandalous waits for treatment at such a strained time.”
