Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has today said the current nursing shortage in Scotland should shame the SNP. The comments are in response to a submission by the Royal College of Nursing to Holyrood’s health committee which revealed that half of Scotland’s nurses say that staffing shortages led to patient care being compromised on their last shift.
Royal College of Nursing to Holyrood’s health committee revealed the figure, which comes from a consultation of over 3,000 Scottish nurses.
Commenting Mr Cole-Hamilton said:
“This is a damning insight into the state of the NHS in Scotland that should shame the SNP. The fact that nurses feel that patient safety has been compromised due to lack of staff is deeply worrying.
"Our nurses within the NHS work incredibly hard but it is clear they are being stretched to breaking point. The SNP need to step in immediately and make sure that our wards are fully staffed. That starts by scrapping the NHS pay cap and give staff the resources and support they need to do their jobs. ”
