Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP has today called for the Scottish Government to act swiftly to ease pressure on our health services and boost resources for the care sector, as new statistics showed more people stuck in hospital unnecessarily.
The delayed discharge census at the end of April showed 1,062 people were stuck in hospital due to health and social care reasons, compared to 1,044 the month before and 943 at the end of December.
Mr Cole-Hamilton said:
“It is absurd that over 1,000 patients are stuck in hospital unnecessarily and at vast expense because carers can’t be found to visit them at home, or there isn’t a care home place available.
“The scarcity of community care packages is piling more pressure on beds in front line services. We know that when patients are trapped in hospital their physical health and mental wellbeing often deteriorate. Medical staff have deemed these patients ready to leave but the support they need to move on is just not there. That’s not good enough.
“Scottish Liberal Democrats demand an end to the social care scandal. The Health Secretary must take swift action to eradicate these long waits on delayed discharge.”
