Cole-Hamilton: NHS Tayside finances in "intensive care"

Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP today said the SNP's approach to the NHS has left health boards' finances in "intensive care" after the Auditor General again warned that NHS Tayside faced "significant financial challenges".

Despite making more than £45 million of cuts last year, NHS Tayside missed its target for efficiency savings by £1.3 million. The Audit Scotland report also stated that a funding gap of £50 million is projected for this year.

Mr Cole-Hamilton said:

"In financial terms, NHS Tayside is in intensive care. However, it isn't the only health board struggling to make ends meet in the face of what auditors have previously described as "unprecedented" budget cuts.

"Doctors, nurses and NHS staff are doing all they can but cuts on this scale can only have a damaging impact on services.

"The SNP must take responsibility for this shambles and work closely with NHS Tayside to ensure hardworking doctors and nurses have the support and resources they need to do the job properly and deliver top quality patient care for all.”
