Commenting on the publication of the national review of targets and indicators in health and social care, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP said:
"Under this SNP Government health and social care targets have been missed and missed again. Children have waited almost two years for the treatment they desperately need and a flagship cancer target hasn't been met in five years.
"It makes sense to look at whether the right things are being measured and how they can be used to drive improvement. Targets shouldn't be burden to staff, distort priorities or get in the way of effective treatment.
"I have recently written to the Health Secretary to request that the Scottish Government learn from the example of NHS Lanarkshire, whose approach in publishing the reasons as to why treatment delays for cancer care occur has helped bring those delays down.
"The Scottish Government must also give the NHS the support and resources it needs to meet standards, improve waiting times and deliver the care that patients and staff expect."
