Cole-Hamilton: Damning diagnosis of SNP GP workforce planning

Commenting on part 2 of Audit Scotland's report into NHS workforce planning published today, which warns that the Scottish Government is facing a significant challenge to increase the number of people working in GP surgeries, Scottish Liberal Democrat health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton said:

"Audit Scotland's diagnosis is damning. This is a government that has ignored serious challenges for years.

"More and more patients are facing long waiting lists. GP service staff are tired of waiting to hear whether they will be able to find replacements for staff who retire or leave the profession.

“The Scottish health service is long overdue a properly integrated workforce plan. The Health Secretary should commit to publishing an annual report on workforce planning and lead an annual debate on it at Parliament. That would mean future failings can be rectified before we reach crisis point, and patients and staff can be reassured that ministers have a grip of staffing from training through to retirements.

“Scottish Liberal Democrats are also committed to delivering new mental health staff in every GP surgery, ensuring that skilled specialists are in place to give everyone the care they need.”
