Scottish Liberal Democrats health spokesperson Alex Cole-Hamilton MSP today called on the Scottish Government to ensure that the NHS is better prepared for winter after more than 10,000 patients missed the NHS 4 hour A&E target during January.
New figures released today by ISD Scotland confirmed that just 91.8% of patients at A&E were seen within 4 hours - the worst performance for 12 months.
Mr Cole-Hamilton said:
“Despite the tireless efforts of doctors and nurses in hospitals across the country, A&E targets have been missed month after month under this SNP Government. These statistics confirm that more than 10,000 people waited longer than four hours to be seen during January.
“Staff and patients are consistently being let down by a Scottish Government failing to prepare properly for winter and failing to get to grips with the challenges facing our health service. Additional pressure will be placed upon A&E departments unless ministers address issues including the GP recruitment crisis and the desperate need to deliver a step change in mental health.”
