Case for prisoner voting becoming irresistible

Responding to the First Minister’s comments on prisoner voting, Edinburgh Western MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton, who sits on the Equalities & Human Rights Committee, said:

“There were indications from the First Minister today that the Scottish Government is considering giving some prisoners the vote, we need to know what exactly she has in mind.

“The prisoner voting ban flouts international law and is neither fair nor progressive. No other developed European democracy does it.

“In addition it is entirely arbitrary. If you were sentenced for 3 years in Spring 2014 you would have missed 9 electoral tests, but if you were sentenced for the same period in June 2017 you would miss none.

"The Scottish Parliament has the power to deliver change and we know that to reduce reoffending more must be done to prepare offenders to rejoin our communities. An important part of that is ensuring they are more aware of their responsibilities as citizens, not alienating them altogether."
