Stop the drop-off charge

Margaret Smith MSP and Mike Crockart MP are leading the campaign to stop Edinburgh Airport to introducing a £1 charge for dropping off passengers at its terminal building by car.

The £1 fee is expected to be introduced in October this year.

There will still be a free drop-off zone but it will be relocated to the long-stay car park at the airport, where passengers will be able to catch a bus to the terminal.

The £1 fee will be enforced by barriers at a new drop-off zone on the ground-floor of the airport's multi-storey car park.

The plate recognition scheme will work by charging drivers as they leave the area, with initial charges pegged at £1 for 10 minutes.

We are seeing airlines and now airports introducing these additional charges all over the place and it is time to say enough is enough.

Commenting on the news, Margaret Smith MSP for Edinburgh West said: "I am very concerned about the proposed measures. It seems to me an unnecessary and unfair charge.

"Any reduced access to drop off and collection points near the terminal building will have a significant impact on disabled and older passengers who may well struggle with the reduced accessibility.

"I have raised my concerns with management at Edinburgh Airport and will continue to press for the charges not to be introduced."
